“True Rolling Slick Greens, Well Thought Out Design, Excellent Condition, Friendly Staff and a Challenging Yet Playable Course for Even the First Timer…” We hear this again and again, it must be true!
In a state where beautiful golf courses are around every other tall Georgia Pine…
Laurel Island Links opened in 1996 and designed by David Love III stands out from the crowd because of its well manicured Bermuda grass tees, fairways, greens, nearby marshlands and holes wondering along the Crooked River basin. Nominated by Golf Digest as one of the "Best New Courses in America" and Atlanta Magazine as the best golf course on the Georgia Coast, this course includes seven bridges spanning low-lying areas to connect the links.
The land here was beautiful before we ever came along… add an excellent layout and then meticulously take care of it and you have the beautiful golf course that Laurel Island Links is. You'll be introduced early to the marshlands which rest alongside the second and third holes and present a formable hazard. For a right-handed player, a big hook off the tee is a lost ball… don't bother looking in the marsh.

#1, a 386-yard par four that curves slightly left around a bunker, represents the entire golf course well in its traditional elements of the design and upfront layout. The fairway here is wide like a lot of holes and the proper approach is from right which can be detected by even the beginner player. A bunker protects short and left and the green curves behind it, rising at the rear center. It's the perfect starting hole that gives you a chance to settle into your round before you venture into the Georgia woods.
In an interview with Links Magazine, Davis Love III explained his thoughts on over challenging golf courses: “I see the trend of trying to make a golf course more difficult, and I see players getting excited when we go back to something old and traditional. It doesn't mean it has to be boring or plain. I just think that older style courses require more thought in the design, and they require a little more thought in playing them.”
The greens are generally protected on one side or the other with a bunker so strate
gically choose your approach and save a visit to the “beach” for after the round. The 4th, 7th, 9th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 18th all clearly favor one angle of approach over others.
The most difficult greens on the course are the 1st, 4th, 8th, 9th and the finishing 18th. While all of the greens are speedy, these greens offer the most break and inaccurate lag putting can lead to a certain three-putt. Most of the greens are angled behind bunkers and feature a hogback swale in the center, essentially dividing the green into two sloping segments.
Coming off of the 14th green, get ready for the beautiful 15th hole, 560+ yards from the back tees, it's a collection of all the excellent characteristics of the golf course in one hole. Avoid the large bunker guarding the green, come in from the left. Don't go too far to the left, another fairway bunker and water guards this side of the fairway. The large green peaks at the center and rolls toward the rear right behind the bunker, which makes it difficult to reach a center or back pin placement.
